Maybe some
of you have not seen a P.T.O. Although more prevalent on 3 speed
Land Cruisers, they appeared on some 4 speeds, the factory instructions
below are from a '76 FJ-40. They ran off of an extra gear in the
transfer case. Many of you can look under a FJ-40 and see a cover
on the side of the transfer case. This where the gearbox for the
PTO should be. They ran driveshafts up to the front, through the
a hole in the front frame crossmember. These winches had a roller
fairlead and alot of cable. From my understanding, the transfer case
is put in neutral and then the winch is controlled from the lever on the
front. The winch capacity is limited to it safety shear pin.
Toyota offered PTO winches on the US versions of the FJ-40, FJ-45, and
FJ-55. They used the power of the engine and were pretty strong, I have
even heard stories of pulling Cruisers up in trees!

Here is a
front view of a PTO winch, This is basically the way it looked from the
factory, but this one has a little use under its belt. Also the hook
is missing. |
| This is the
side gear box where allot of the work happens. Below is where the
driveshaft hooks up on the side. |
 |
| See how close
the front steering pin is? The PTO winch really fills up the area
between the front frame horns. |
 |
| Here is the
passenger side view showing the control knob, below is the the hook up
to the frame. I had always wondered what those threaded holes were
for. |

These instructions were sent to me by Todd Richardson, and are from the
factory brochure for his 1976 FJ-40 |
Here are some
new pics sent in by David, his is in pretty good shape.
